We are always looking for new voices to join the Ruckus community!
We are a VERY small team gaining very little from this, so unfortunately, we are unable to compensate artists at this time. We understand that this is a turn-off for a lot of people, so feel free to ignore us after this :).
Before anything, however, please read the guidelines below for contributing to Ruckus:
- We will, under no circumstances, accept work that is homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, racist, classist, colorist, or hurtful in any other way. This includes any writing that includes “jokes” at the expense of any marginalized community or any other person.
- All work must be original. If there are multiple creators, all must be mentioned in the message and properly credited. Work created by AI will not be accepted.
- We encourage Chicago-area students and beyond to submit!
Interviews
- Interviews can be either conducted by you or by one of the Ruckus writers.
- Please email us with your pitch, a scope of the questions you want to ask, who will be interviewing who, and any other information you would like for us to keep in mind!
Contribute Visual Art
- We are looking for both collections and singular pieces of art.
- Visual art can include photography, design (including architectural, graphic, etc.), painting, drawing, sculpture, animation, 3D art, etc.
- Write something to say about your art! You could go as much as writing specifically about your art. We ask that every piece comes with a title, date, medium, and a short statement (or it can be as detailed as you want).
- It is a plus if you have an idea of how you want your gallery to look on our website.
- It is best if you submit a Google Drive or Dropbox link to our email. Rename the files and write their descriptions in the email!
Contribute Writing
- We accept satire, nonfiction essays and articles, fictional & nonfictional creative writing, poetry, and any other literary work you may have!
- All writing must be in English. Bilingual work is accepted as long as proper translations are provided for clarity.
- Include a short bio that talks about who you are and why you are writing. Make sure to include your name (alias is fine), pronouns (if you are comfortable), and something you want to share (what do you like to do? Where are you from? Your favorite animal? Anything!)
- You can either submit an idea for an article (as in a short email explaining what you hope to write) or a full-written article. If you are sharing an article, please include it either as a PDF document, a Google Doc, or in the body of the email itself. Please submit via the email below!
- Articles should be around 500-1,500 words long. Longer? Shorter? Sure, send it over. This is just a guideline to make sure our site does not explode.
- Include hyperlinks to any factual claims you are making so that they are properly cited.
- Use your voice! We are not in search of academic journalism, use your personal voice, whatever that is. Please write in a way that is authentic to yourself.
Do not be afraid to contribute! No matter how crazy your work may seem, we want to hear it. Obviously, do not submit any work that is hateful or violates our discrimination policy.
If you somehow still want to contribute to our little site, contact us, and we will get in touch with the next steps of contributing.
